Fluoride for Sensitive Teeth
Explore The Benefits of Fluoride Treatments
While topical fluoride has long been used by dentists to reduce the risk of developing cavities, professional fluoride treatments can also be used to help patients experience less decay and tooth sensitivity. Each fluoride treatment is delivered after cleanings when teeth are able to soak up more of the mineral and strengthen the enamel as much as possible, helping to reduce discomfort due to sensitivity.
Professional Fluoride vs. Over-The-Counter Fluoride Rinses & Fluoridated Water
A professional fluoride treatment presents significant advantages over OTC, because it can:
- Provide an immediate remedy for sensitive teeth
- Seal off the pores of teeth
- Provide the best remineralization of weak, cavity-prone enamel
- Reduce the risk of cavities in areas of gum recession
- Reverse early decay
- Protect white spots/circles from forming around braces
Who Is The Right Candidate For These Treatments?
We provide fluoride after every pediatric dental cleaning, and to adults that battle frequent cavities, tooth sensitivity, or have weak tooth enamel. If in a gel form, a tray is worn in the mouth for 3-5 minutes. Varnish fluoride is brushed directly onto the teeth and stays in place all day.
What Happens After Your Fluoride Treatment Is Applied?
Applying fluoride takes only a few minutes! We ask that you don’t brush your teeth until several hours later, to allow optimal mineral uptake on your teeth. If you receive fluoride gel, we also ask that you don’t eat or drink for at least 30 minutes after your appointment. Patients that receive fluoride treatment do not have to wait before having a drink or meal.
